What is the strength of boron carbide?
Boron carbide has very high strength and hardness, and can reach a strength of 2000-3500 MPa. The bonding method of boron carbide crystals uses sp3 bonds similar to diamonds, so the hardness is very high. In addition, because the elements of boron carbide are arranged very closely to each other and the cells are relatively dense, its mechanical properties are very superior. Boron carbide has high bending, tensile and compressive strength at room temperature, and still has excellent mechanical properties at high temperatures. At the same time, boron carbide has a small thermal expansion coefficient, a large elastic modulus, and high thermal conductivity and electrical conductivity.
In the aviation field, boron carbide is widely used in engine combustion chambers and jet engine bearings, fan blades, and high-temperature components. In the military field, ballistic warheads, fire guidance heads, cluster bombs and other weapon equipment made of boron carbide have very high penetration and destructive performance. In the fields of chemistry and coal chemical industry, boron carbide materials also perform well in harsh environments such as wear and corrosion, such as in chemical pipelines and pump impellers.
